A workshop on ‘Bio-based products for growth and jobs in the EU: the crucial role of regions in boosting the bioeconomy bioeconomy and the circular economy’ organised by the Bio-based Industries Joint Undertaking will take place during Open Days 2015 - the European Week of Regions and Cities, taking place from 12 to 15 October. The workshop was selected from proposals submitted to the Committee of the Regions.
Bio-based industries and products offer new opportunities for regional and urban development as they depend on local biomass resources including agro, forest and urban waste streams.
The workshop will outline the economic and growth potential of the European bio-based economy and its potential for regional innovation development, including through the development of SMEs’ innovative capacities. It will present concrete examples of how regional authorities can foster Smart Specialisation Strategies (RIS3) to exploit this potential.
Investments in the development of new bio-based industries are best planned at regional level, where the positive impacts of value chains and new employment opportunities are also felt.
